MELBOURNE

Why Melbourne?

From green space to graffiti, hidden bars to high rise buildings and apostles to AFL, Melbourne is a diverse city with hidden secrets to discover. Wind your way through the backstreets to find kooky coffee shops amongst the colour-painted walls. Don’t forget to look out for clues for the secret bars or you might miss an experience you never knew you needed. You’ll hear it from every Melburnian, if you’re from Melbourne, it’s the best city in Australia

Highlights

"There is so much to see in Australia, if you can, try and do it all. Uluru is incredible. The East Coast is a must-do (Frazer Island, The Whitsundays, Magnetic Island, Byron Bay, Noosa, Sydney). Further south there is the Great Ocean Road which is beautiful but do it when it's summer."

Botanical Gardens

With so much nature in the heart of the city, Royal Botanical gardens offer a sanctuary of nature for picnic spots, reading spaces or walking tracks. Located on the Yarra River and open from 7:30-5pm, this greenspace is a perfect sanctuary to spend some time in nature. With calming lakes and foliage galore, these offer an Aboriginal Heritage Walk or a free guided walk across the gardens. If you have time, try punting on the Ornamental Lake whilst absorbing the scenery and the backdrop of Melbourne city.

Federation Square

Opposite the renowned Flinders Street Station, Federation Square is a hub for culture, arts and events based on the river bank. Using websites such as https://fedsquare.com/whats-on, you can latch onto some cool events that might be taking place. In and around Federation Square you will find the cool laneways and Degraves Street which also has some unreal food. Once you have explored what Federation square has to offer, enjoy a stroll along the riverbank to look onto the MCG.

City Laneways

Wind your way through the city, masked with graffiti, shops and cafes. Keep your eyes peeled for the dodgy doors to access the secret spots across the city. Decorated with local graffiti art, the alleyways provide a wicked backdrop. Head to Blender Street for , AC/DC lane for some rock’n’roll artwork or Tattersalls Lane for scrumptious snacks.

Transport

  • Public Transport
  • Car Rental
  • Coaches

The public transport is fantastic and armed with a myki card and city mapper the place is yours to explore. You can get a Myki from your first journey you take across the city, easily topping up at the available booths. These can be used on trains or busses, but just double check at each station you have the correct amount before you jump in the queue to get onboard. One piece of advice is that tram inspectors are sneaky so tap on to avoid large fines. If you’re a student you get a concession which means I think its $2.20.

If you don't have a car, use a website called Car Next Door, where you can rent other people's cars near you for cheap. Jucy Car Rental and Wicked Campers are good for hiring for long-distance drives and road trips.

If you want to head from Melbourne to neighbouring major cities, look at the GreyHound Website for coaches leaving from major stations. These coaches travel up and down Australia on a timetabled schedule to get you from place to place with little hassle! Depending on your route, you can get single passes, hop-on-hop-off or 30/60 day passes to make your way around the country (https://www.greyhound.com.au/passes).
