Canberra is a hidden gem that has numerous attractions, great restaurants and bars, and a plethora of outdoor activities to get stuck into. Lonely Planet placed Canberra third in its top ten cities for 2018 and it was voted the world’s most liveable city by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Canberra has over 30 national parks and nature reserves within a few hours’ drive. It may not have an iconic skyline but is dominated by Telstra Tower on top of Black Mountain. You can hike up the mountain in a couple of hours. Mount Ainsle also provides excellent views of the city while Lake Burley Griffin is another great place to walk or cycle.
Canberra has many national institutions, making it culturally rich. For art lovers, there is the National Gallery of Australia which contains over 166,000 works of art. The Australian War Memorial – voted the number one landmark in Australia – has a great museum and is worth visiting on Armistice Day or ANZAC Day.
The Floriade festival in September is “Australia’s biggest celebration of spring” with a month of events including the chance to see a million flowers in bloom in the Commonwealth Park.
The Canberra Raiders play most weeks and if you're at Unilodge accommodation you can get free tickets to watch a game.

Canberra is not a large city so the easiest way to get around is often on foot, although there is a free bus you can take around the city centre. The long-awaited new tram network has finally been installed which means that you can get to other districts of Canberra very quickly. If you plan to use public transport frequently, you should consider getting a MyWay card which you can buy from any newsagent in town. The price for bus and tram rides is usually around $3 but with a MyWay card they are considerably cheaper at around $1.
Canberra is a very bike-friendly city and most people take advantage of its many cycle paths. You could buy a brand-new bike but if you want to save money, go to the Bike Shed to get one made from second-hand parts
You can use companies like ACT Cabs but it is usually cheaper to use Uber or Ola (another ridesharing app).
Canberra is excellently located and in easy reach of both Sydney and Melbourne by train, plane or bus.
