Accommodation in Singapore

Best areas to live in:

The cost of living can vary depending on the area you choose to live. There is a big expat community around Orchard, Holland Village, Bukit Timah and East Coast however these tend to be more expensive. More people are migrating to Serangoon Gardens, Hougang and Pungol, where there is better value for money. There are a few up and coming areas too like Clementi and West Coast. With anywhere, just make sure there’s good transport links with the MRT.

Areas to avoid:

Since Singapore is such a safe city, there aren’t really too many areas to avoid. Steer clear of Sim Lim Square and Geylang.

Useful Tips:

  1. Some hostels offer student accommodation and you can rent a single room by the day, week, month, or do a three-month contract with a valid student visa. Some hostels are exclusively for international students so it’s a great way to make new friends! Be prepared to pay around around SG$700/month for a single room.

  2.  There is the option to live with a local family. This is a cheaper option, as boarding arrangements can range between SG$500 -SG$1000/month.
